Here's an easy link that should start you in the right direction: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveller_(role-playing_game)
Once you've digested the article, you could start visiting the external links at the bottom.
Keep in mind, the universe of Traveller is big (really big) but most referees will give you plenty of introduction to whatever is happening in their particular game.
Looks like most of your scheduled games are GURPS powered. I think I have played GURPS...a million years ago at a con. I don't remember it. What Traveller-flavored rules/books do you recommend? I'm especially interested in getting to know the setting.
I'm pretty new to Traveller...I only began playing about 2-3 years ago...and I gotta tell you, it's pretty easy...the dice system is probably one of the easiest I've ever used...and the Traveller players/referees I've played with are all great people and are understanding of the newbie "fear".
From what I've observed, Traveller players are some of the nicest, user-friendly people in the gaming hobby. I've noticed that most of our games for Traveller-Con are designated "Beginner", which should tell you how much we love newbies.
As far as charts go, most of us don't use'em. Traveller is the original 2d6 (that's two six-sided dice - your basic Parker Brothers die) game, probably as a reaction to the D&D "roll a d-handful" phenomenon from days gone by.
Even our miniature games at Travellercon are the user friendly Ground Zero Games Stargrunt system. Lotsa pretty-coloured dice, less of the charts.
C'mon down and give Traveller a try. You'll be taking your first step into a wider universe.
(Did I actually just write that? Sorry, my young padawan.)
I've never played Traveller, but I'd like to give it a shot, especially if someone runs a Dune scenario. Will there be any games for people who don't have charts tattooed inside their eyelids or who don't know the Traveller universe better than their own home town? Otherwise, is there anyone in the vicinity of Mechanicsburg, PA who's starting a game and doesn't mind an inexperienced player?
